Dare we believe in Spring? We have warmer days, but the wind has made it hard to relish.
It is cold – not January cold, but too much for the verge of May. And the nights remain close to freezing or outright frosty.
Being a Heeler, I am ever the optimist! I have gone wading in the creek a few times [yes, it is cold!] and even lay in the shade and dig holes in the cool dirt – as if it is already summer.
As I lay there, I’ve come up with my list of Hope and Happy for spring:
The sun always comes up, and it is much further north behind the east hills.
Most of the snow is gone. There may be more but we are headed the right direction. The turkeys think it’s spring, too.
The bathroom is full of seedlings and maybe in another month we will plant outside.
The chickens are overjoyed to be loose again – they run, cackle and scratch the open ground, down to the creek and across into the horse pasture.
There is at least one whistle pig who foolishly thinks he can enter my territory.
The horses are shedding; wherever they lay down or roll they leave a wide hairy explosion – it looks like a ridiculous patch of snow.
I go to the creek daily – it is too cold for a full-dog dip yet, but feels good on my paws.
There are suddenly dozens of outdoor chores, most of them I supervise from the seat or shade of my four-wheeler.
I’d rather be here on the ranch doing anything – even more than a ride in the truck!
Even now I usually seek out a good patch of shade, but when I lay in the warm sun, I can imagine summer – soon!
