A Cowdogs Advice

Grip up, America!

In Between

03/26/2026 by ladysmith@cowdogsadvice.com

Around here, it seems we are in between.

Spring has officially begun, but there is no guarantee it can be taken seriously.

Just over a week ago, we had nearly three feet of snow!

Then a few days later, it was sunny and warm; almost all the snow disappeared.

Tomorrow it is expected to be cold, drizzly and snowy. Again.

We continue in between winter and spring. It is neither and both.

There is new grass showing in protected spots, and early tough tulips sprouting faster than the deer can eat them.

There are iris, chives and daffodils left alone by the deer.

Fewer wild turkeys come around now, but I’ll bet they all come back in force with the next snowstorm!

The ice is still on the pond, though not so solid I can walk on it. But I did take a dip in the creek and it was invigorating!

This old cowdog has observed much of this life is in between.

At times I’m in between dinner and snacks – and I loudly remind the boss to shorten that long dry spell!

Sometimes I can’t decide between the couch

the floor,

or my bed.

There is a lot of adventure in the space between young and old.

In between starting a big job and finishing it.

Sometimes we are in between the valley and the mountaintop.

And in this life, we are between heaven and earth. We live this life with joy, happiness, fears and failures – but I know where I’m going.

Oh, it is a beautiful world here for a little Heeler, especially in the wild unfolding of this season.

But, like the song says, I’m homesick for heaven.

In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. – John 16:33

Welcome!

I am Ladysmith, a Blue Heeler. I live in central Montana with the people I rescued; my dad, a crusty old cowboy who swore he would never have another dog last time, but has been completely smitten by me ever since we met. My mom, a kind writer and artist, who knows I am a angel sent from heaven, and helps me with this endeavor.
