A Cowdogs Advice

Grip up, America!

A Humble Heart

04/10/2025 by ladysmith@cowdogsadvice.com

This week one of my cowdog virtues is getting a real workout I tell you!

I really thought it was finally Spring, even though it is only early April.

Even after many new snowstorms, it is melting fast now and bare ground appears again. Yesterday, for the first time this year, there was a hint of green on the hillsides, with cows and horses all trying to get a little fresh grass.

I’ve seen a couple of robins!

Oh wait – not so fast! This weekend we have snow predicted again, maybe a foot or more in the high country.

I have enjoyed sunning, trailing new smells, keeping a cowdog eye on increased outdoor activity – and now more snow! We haven’t even had a good mud season yet!

Patience, pup.

Might as well  enjoy whatever the day brings, because I am not a weather consultant for God.

I guess if he sends it, I might as well be glad for it. And wait patiently for a real Spring.

But I am running out of positive adjectives for snow!

So that brings me to another cowdog virtue, one that is a struggle for most.

It is humbling to realize how small this little Heeler is, in the big picture of Gods great world.

And how small I am in the smaller picture, of my own valley, my ranch, my patch of favored shade.

I am a Heeler after all, and generally think I am in control. Then I am reminded, by another whirlwind tour of winter, that I am at the mercy of so much, instead.

It is a more pleasant journey when I humbly remember that. What good does it do to twist in the wind or cuss out the snow?

I want a kind season to come for good and stay til summer.

But with another humbling snowstorm, I’ll just wait it out on the couch, patiently knowing true Spring will get here, after a few more rounds of near winter, teasing spring, late winter, warning springs …. and none is up to me.

I humbly give up my patch in the sun, and bow to the blizzard.

A humble heart sees beauty where others don’t.”

Welcome!

I am Ladysmith, a Blue Heeler. I live in central Montana with the people I rescued; my dad, a crusty old cowboy who swore he would never have another dog last time, but has been completely smitten by me ever since we met. My mom, a kind writer and artist, who knows I am a angel sent from heaven, and helps me with this endeavor.
