This week I had to spend a day at a kennel when mom went out of town – WITHOUT ME!
It really is a nice place, and I have my own large and quiet spot, because they say I don’t play well with others – and they’re right!
In reality, I can get along with most dogs, but at first this intense cowdog takes over my whole body and I over-react, with leaping, yipping, charging and, sometimes, fighting.
So as I watch the antics of all the other dogs, from a safe distance, it got me thinking about my manners and how to behave.
I re-read Lady’s lessons, and promise I will try to do better and follow the lessons from a Heeler. Then I can’t help but be a better dog!
I’m an old dog and have a good bit of wisdom, if I do say so myself. Of course, for a cowdog, right from puppyhood we are filled with advice, most of it good. Here I give you a few lessons from the Heeler picked up along the way, to be practiced every day:
Take plenty of naps, sleep in peace at night, stretch out good when rising.
Be master of your truck, and never miss a chance for a joyride.
There are some very good buried treasures – dig until you find them.
Dance with joy and bring others into your happiness.
If it smells good – eat it.
If it smells bad – roll in it.
Always be loyal.
Look up and enjoy the world around you.
Live every day as if it is the only one you get.
I have a book full of old cowdog advice, but right now I’m laying in the long rays of an Indian Summer sun, so will just leave you encouragement with these few.
Happy Autumn!
