I think we know that all dogs go to heaven.
In fact, I believe all animals go there, it is just people that sinned and have to make amends to get to heaven. But some of us are heaven sent, too.
Now, this old cowdog is not a theologian who knows the mystical ways things move between heaven and earth. While all dogs go there someday, some dogs are born here and live out their lives. Others come directly from heaven, I think, hiding their wings for a time while they worm their way into that target person’s heart.
I can’t reveal heavenly facts, but I could tell you about many events in my life, that opened a window directly into celestial places and left no doubt about where I’m from.
I was located by accident on a shelter list by mom, when she was struggling through the final days of the great Heeler, Ruger.
A couple of months later, I was still waiting for them. Scheduled to die, I was miraculously taken home by a kind shelter worker. When mom called to find out about me, I was safe at home with Marie, still waiting. And Marie understood where I needed to go.
At our first meeting, right away I went over and sat down by dad. I knew he needed me to carry on for Ruger.
I slept the long 2 hours on the way home, then peed on the floor when I first went in the house. They tried to teach me to stay in a crate, but after months in the slammer, I would have none of that! On our first roadtrip, after 2 days of travel, I waited in the truck and accidently ate dad’s driver’s seat.
In my defense, there wasn’t much to it and mom pointed out that we needed new seats anyway.
At home, in the months that followed, I did a lot of troubling things, and there wasn’t much of the angel shining through. But they still saw it.
How, you ask, does a person see a heaven-sent angel?
Here are a few signs:
2. More than other dogs that have shared your life, this one arrived knowing you.
3. This angel probably came with quirks, but through the troubles, we become the focus of your world.
4. More than any other, you can’t stand the thought of this dog growing old and passing; when it happens, you don’t get over it.
5. There is a look in their eyes, focused yet far away. There is something we just know.
All of us Heelers, earth-born or heaven sent, are here to stand beside our people, keep our herd together, and heal broken hearts. Someday, we have to leave, then we even cause that broken heart. But we still help heal, through happy memories when we ran alongside.
I don’t know what this rainbow bridge is, but I do know all us cowdogs go to heaven when we die. Think how many happy dogs, maybe cats, are waiting for that glad reunion to see their people! We need to know that you’ll be there, too.
