Grip up, America!

Before and After

Before and After

04/21/2023 by ladysmith@cowdogsadvice.com

This week, I met my new doctor, and been thinking a lot about before and after.

We went in to the vet with a list, mostly things I didn’t mind too much.

OK, that anal gland thing was humiliating and infuriating, but I admit it helped and I feel a lot better.

I did not like them taking blood, but Dr Greg told me I needed another test for heartworm, since I came up here from the south where it is more common.

He also checked my leg, since mom has noticed I limp now and then. Just an old war injury, or maybe a football injury, but those things need to be repaired right away, so nothing to do right now.

He did admire my luxurious full tail, although I didn’t think it was right that he suggested I must have some coyote blood because of it!

He looked in my mouth, checked my teeth and determined my age to be a youthful two and a half!

This got me thinking about all the changes in my short life.

There was a time, way back, that led me to being lost and alone in the desert. No one knows about that time but me, I’m not talking.  For my time spans, I’ll call that B.F. – before foster.

As you may remember, I was accused of tangling with a nasty little chihuahua at the only house I could find, but  mercifully the owner called a saint she knew who rescued dogs. The plan was to trap me, but all she had to do was open her car door and call; I came running and knew that ride was my escape from that tiny guarddog’s house . This began DF – during foster.

I was there, learning to live in a kennel among other dogs – but cared for, fed, and even played with.

Then I heard someone wanted me! I flew  1000 miles with PilotsNPaws to the northern Rockies, found a little kid and snow to roll in. This began FH – finally home.

In my short month in FH, I’ve had many adventures. Right now we had another BIG winter storm – I thought this was a time of green and growing!

I ran around outside yesterday doing chores, and had to leap to see above the drifts to see where I was going. It was like vertical snow dog-angels  – just 4 paws and a wet furry splotch on top!

Today, I barely made it off the steps and struggled to get around. Thank goodness for porches, but I’ll be spending today inside. There is more than 2 feet of snow, and it is over my head!

Tuesday we went to town, and there were massive navy blue clouds and thunder, then rainstorms. Only 5 hours later, we had the vicious blizzard start. Before it was looking like Spring. After, a arctic wonderland.

Next week, it’ll be warming up again, before long I won’t have snow to roll in, but I’ll be able to get to the creek to explore. I’ll let you know how it goes, one month FH.

We all have those distinct seasons and times – some far memories and best forgotten, some fondly remembered, maybe reluctantly left. I hope you have an FH time , where you are secure, cared for and loved.
