Today the world is all golden and orange! We have had warm, dry days and cool, sometimes frosty nights, giving generous time for each leaf to gild itself with glowing color. This year there is no vicious overnight freeze that kills everything green all at once. This year we get glorious gold.

The hills are continuously lighting up, a hundred torches, afire even in sunlight. They are every shade of yellow, gold, orange, red, rose, burgundy. And still the brightest star, the stubborn aspen, have not yet turned their signature pure gold.

While some garden crops succumb to the occasional night freeze, others compete for max production. Tomatoes are everywhere and, with a little help, keep pumping out red and orange. Mom has dried them, canned them, froze them.

And the pumpkins start their season in the spotlight. The best part of that is the special biscuits I get, made with fresh pumpkins and maybe a little bacon!

We made special treats for our summer company to take on the road, but now these are just for me. I think it’s a reward for this hardworking cowdog’s work all summer. I may be semi-retired, but still do plenty of herding and guarding, warning and watching.

I may be surveying from the porch more often, but still I’m working.

Mom uses a very old recipe for my homemade biscuits, but she always uses what she has on hand and what I like best. I like it because mom can make it with so many different treats mixed in.

Mom uses what she has on hand, and what I like best!

Here are some of my favorites:

And right now, it is pumpkin season. If you don’t have fresh ones, canned is still good, too. If you are allergic to certain grains or other things,  you can use other flours, cereals, grains. I like beef broth and bits of dry beef and blueberries a lot! Today she grated fresh pumpkin into the mix!

We are short on eggs right now. We’ve got young hens and molting hens, but not a lot of laying hens! But that is the neat thing about my biscuits – really any healthy combination works. Mom says just keep the dry/wet ratio close,  so the dough holds it shape, is not sticky, and can be rolled. The egg wash on top is optional, but sometimes we add eggs to the mix. Then baking and oven drying makes them hard and crunchy, so they keep well.

I believe it is my job to make sure they DO NOT last, however. Mom doesn’t have time to make dog biscuits all the time, but she makes sure I know that I am worth it and she would make them more often if she could. Usually she rolls them quick and cuts them with a pizza cutter.

Cookie cutters or the fast pizza cutter.

The thing is, they are special and a real treat, so I appreciate them when I get them. That is the thing about life – the best things aren’t common, good things are worth waiting for, instant gratification is not. So I savor these with the perfect golden days now.

And there is nothing better on an autumn  day than the smell and anticipation of my special cookies in the oven! I don’t even have to share them with the cats, but sometimes I do.

Dreaming of the pumpkin biscuits I smell baking

When we’re busy and don’t get time for baking, I still get my favorites. I like beef lung tips the best, and so do the cats.  These are good: https://amzn.to/3uvalYv

And this is not a bad substitute for homemade biscuits either: https://amzn.to/3zTVrME

Just in case I eat too many, mom keeps a natural remedy on hand for upset tummys, too!

She makes most of her  treatments, but gets some good medicine from Homeoanimals, here: https://www.homeoanimal.com/?rfsn=5647725.fc8afd

I wanted to send all my followers a bag of biscuits, but mom says we probably can’t make that many. I wish I could invite you here, to enjoy the mountain autumn and eat cookies on the porch with me. Wouldn’t that be a fine cowdog convention!

Well, at least every Heeler out there can make their own treats from my recipe, then savor your own gift of October.

Welcome!

I am Ladysmith, a Blue Heeler. I live in central Montana with the people I rescued; my dad, a crusty old cowboy who swore he would never have another dog last time, but has been completely smitten by me ever since we met. My mom, a kind writer and artist, who knows I am a angel sent from heaven, and helps me with this endeavor.
