Autumn is Biscuit Baking Time

10/14/2022 by ladysmith@cowdogsadvice.com

We have had beautiful Indian Summer here, warm days still, though the nights are chilly.

There are still many outdoor chores to finish before snow flies, but the cool weather means biscuit baking time!

Now I think I deserve some special treats, because I help pick berries and apples,

and most of the garden, which has been picked and dealt with.

There are still a few big pumpkins and squash to gather, but the warm weather makes it easy to leave them a bit longer.

We’ve been canning, drying apples,

and doing a little baking now that the oven doesn’t heat up the house.

Between all the chores,  mom finally made me biscuits! I know every dog out there will love them, so here is the recipe and my personal preferences.

Dreaming of the biscuits I smell baking.

Mom has a very old recipe, but she always uses what she has on hand and what I like best. If you are allergic to certain grains or other things,  you can use other flours, cereals, grains. I like beef broth and bits of dry beef and blueberries a lot! But today, she added a little chopped bacon and carrots, also very favorites with me.

Mom uses what she has on hand, and what I like best!

We are short on eggs as the hens molt and lay less in the shorter days, but that is the neat thing – really any healthy combination is good, mom says just keep the dry/wet ratio close,  so they can be rolled.

Then baking and oven drying makes them hard and crunchy, so they keep well.

Cookie cutters or the faster pizza cutter.

I believe it is my job to make sure they DO NOT last, however. Mom doesn’t have time to make dog biscuits all the time, but she makes sure I know that I am worth it. They are special and a real treat, so I appreciate them when I get them.

That is the thing about life – the best things aren’t common, good things are worth waiting for, instant gratification is not. And there is nothing better on a cold day than the smell and anticipation of my special cookies in the oven! I don’t even have to share them with the cats, but sometimes I do.

When Sprout is here to help bake, I always get extra cookies!

Here is our recipe:

We will take some of my cookies, and go outside now. It is a good time to sit on the porch in the evening, enjoying the cool dusk and watching the moon come up.

Soon enough we will be spending too much time in the cold and dark winter. But right now I’m happy with warm biscuits and warm sunshine.
