Grip up, America!

May Day snow

May Day Snows

05/02/2024 by ladysmith@cowdogsadvice.com

What a great time of year this is! Flowers are starting to bloom, at least here in the northern Rockies foothills. Actually all we have are a few crocus and the start of daffodils, but down a bit in elevation and there are plenty of bright yellow daffies out.

The deer, desperate for some greens, eat off the tops of most everything that comes up. We got a photo from my aunt in Arizona, loaded with all kinds of flowers in bloom. Isn’t it funny how different the world can be, a few hundred or a thousand miles apart?

It is probably best we don’t have a lot in bloom yet, because this week they would likely succumb to the cold, as we have another round of rain, embellished with some snow, too!

May Day, a long-standing festival of Spring, started with a white-out blizzard here! Maybe I’ll make some snow angels to celebrate! It is a little early to celebrate the end of winter I think.

Now this cowdog loves rolling, running and burrowing in snow, but I am really ready for some warmth! It is ridiculous to be snowing in May!

And yet, if God sends snow, then I guess I choose snow. It’ll be cold and wet for a week, then a couple warm days, then back to rain.

Of course we all need rain and can’t complain about that. Without rain, you have a desert and I do know something about the desert. They have their own kind of life, flowers and beauty, but I love my green grass and gardening up here.

Weather brings out the planner in this dog.

I look ahead and quickly prioritize and do things that need the rain [or snow]. We will seed some native pasture grass and some wildflower gardens. They will love the rain.

When it rains and snows, I’ll spend some time inside, looking mournfully out the window and wishing, sleeping a lot, and maybe I’ll get a fresh bone to occupy those juicy hours.

There will probably be heat on, the cats will hog the warmest spots, and we’ll work on things inside.

I’ll help with trim, and finishing the porch, maybe even putting up the new doors. We will discuss paint colors, planting needs, and dream about the pears to come someday from the trees we ordered.

Some of our plant orders are sure to arrive, so we will go out and plant trees and shrubs, snow and rain be damned. It is great weather for the planted, just not much fun for the planters. I may lay on the porch and watch.

We will continue to feed the horses a little, since there isn’t enough new grass yet.

The chickens will be unhappy if they have to stay in their pen again, but it is better then going out and blowing away in a storm, or getting high-centered in a drift! Silly birds.

It’ll be good weather for a savory roast, or a good stew – and mom shares with me.

Weather is just one of the streams in life, that order and determine how our days play out. It is the topic of high praise and complaints.

Some places have already suffered through tornadoes.

In the midst of it all, like all other uncertainty in life, a good herding dog, and wise people, can find profound clarity and peace in God’s order.

We can see His divine plan and the reassuring promise that He holds all things together,

even when our lives feel disarrayed.

Yup – if God sends rain, then I choose rain. Or even snow on May Day.

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.                                                                                                                                                                                                             Proverbs 19:21   NIV

Welcome!

I am Ladysmith, a Blue Heeler. I live in central Montana with the people I rescued; my dad, a crusty old cowboy who swore he would never have another dog last time, but has been completely smitten by me ever since we met. My mom, a kind writer and artist, who knows I am a angel sent from heaven, and helps me with this endeavor.
