Spring Tease

Spring Tease

02/22/2024 by ladysmith@cowdogsadvice.com

We have had a week of glorious almost-spring weather around here; it makes a dog want to run and roll and bark!

The snow is melting fast, running in hurried rivulets down the road and hills, making little creeks on their way to the real stream.

It is sunny most every day. It is easy to forget that just a few weeks ago, it was nearly forty below here!

Ah, but the heartless winter isn’t done yet, and this is a spring tease. I’m told we still have two or three more winters due this year.

In fact, this desert dog was surprised to learn March and April are the high-snowfall months here, but then I remembered last year, just a couple weeks after I arrived, when we had a huge blizzard and mom got the four-wheeler stuck and had to walk to the barn. I didn’t get to go, because it was too deep for me, although I thought it was great for playing!

I hear people talk , in tones of dread and warning, about climate change. It seems to me, that has always happened, known as seasons.

There was nobody to give dire predictions of global warming at the end of the last ice age; ice melted, glaciers retreated, and the world carried on, season by season.

In January, we had both record cold and, a couple of weeks later, record warmth! Now I don’t stay out as long when the thermometer is frozen below zero, but I still get out to smell, roll, explore a little before I head in to the couch.

I think whatever the air currents and ocean drifts and sky sends, will just carry on as long as God allows the world to be. Watch a hurricane once, or a tornado, or a flood – how arrogant are we to think we have any control?

If God sends snow, then I choose snow.

If God sends  sun, then I choose sun.

If He sends wind, or rain, or too much or too little – well I’ll just do my best to care for this place and be grateful for it all.

Today, with my face to the sun, gratitude comes easy.

Get out and appreciate your world a bit, even if Spring is just pretending.

Welcome!

I am Ladysmith, a Blue Heeler. I live in central Montana with the people I rescued; my dad, a crusty old cowboy who swore he would never have another dog last time, but has been completely smitten by me ever since we met. My mom, a kind writer and artist, who knows I am a angel sent from heaven, and helps me with this endeavor.
